I noticed that Baja FSAE college teams sometimes use these in their buggy design and was wondering about their viability in 4wd applications (FSAE uses RWD, all around independent suspension). I read some articles on it and it seemed like an interesting challenge to actually put one in and make it work.

Jeep has actually used a CVT in the Patriot. I had a really hard time getting used to the high RPMs, it feels like the tranny is slipping all of the time and seems slow to respond. I think that they are best suited to really light applications like Formula SAE or side-by-sides at this time.

I've only heard of one CVT that would be useful in a Jeep Wrangler. Not really available yet. But I'd rather have a manual tranny anyway.

The problem that I see with Jeep putting a CVT in a TRAIL RATED JEEP is that they will uses my SPACE SHUTTLE CHALLENGER THEORY. It blew up because it used cheap o-rings for sealing the fuel lines. They used 50 cent o-rings when they should have gone with the 60 cent ones. They uses a type of CVT in heavy equipment and they work all right. Front-end loaders, some skidders, farm tractors to name a few.
