Sounds like maybe the clutch arm or throwout bearing is hanging up on something. Has the arm fallen off of the pivot? All return springs in place?

This sounds like what happened when the clutch master cylinder went bad on a friends XJ. If all else checks out you may need to change out the master.

my brother and i just played this game..... after replacing the master and save it still wasn't working..... turns out the throwout fork had come off the throwout bearing, braking the springs in the process..... we were only able to see this after we pulled the tranny..... by then we just replaced it all for good measure

My son has a 1997 F150 on which he replaced both the master and the slave.  Had a similar problem in that it would not bleed correctly because the slave was low on the firewall.  We used a pressure bleeder and this resolved the problem.  There was not issue, however, with clutch pedal pulsation.  This is s known problem with that series of F150's.
