Will Jeep ever offer a diesel?

If there is ever a case for a vehicle having a diesel option, the Wrangle is ideal! More torque, power, cleaner burning fuel, ruggedness, etc. etc. If you read Edmunds reviews, most consumers lover their Wranglers with the exception that they're under powered. Hopefully FIAT has some market research firms that that convey the message to management. I'd buy one in a second....and feel good about doing it knowing I could tread lightly with an eco-friendly powerplant. JP- Do you have any input on pushing this issue?

The real question is would anybody ever buy one? It would not be an inexpensive option. Would you pay $6000 for the diesel option? Most have probably indicated that they would not, otherwise the bean counters would probably make it happen.
Ford cancelled their F150 light diesel program and GM promptly followed. There must be some numbers against diesel options somewhere.
But you can buy a brand new JK today, from a special dealer, that is better than any other JK, axle strength wise, that has either a V8 or diesel option. If you really want more power it's out there for the taking. Got sixty grand? Contact American Expedition Vehicles about the J-8, brand new from Chrysler.

Thanks for the AEV info. Very cool Jeep. I was thinking a factory diesel option could be more in line with VW's TDI diesel. It adds just less than 3k to the price of the unleaded model. I'll keep my fingers crossed!

True, but rumor is that VW is selling the TDI option at a loss. So in reality it just may not make a great business case. It's kind of a gamble for VW. If they can dispel the myth that all diesels are smokey and dirty it could pay off in the long run for not only them. Problem is most people in the U.S. still think of those nasty '80s diesels when you bring it up.
Rumor was that the Liberty diesel was also sold at a loss. Not sure about the Grand with the Mercedes 3.0L.
But yeah, sign me up. I'd love to see a diesel Wrangler in the U.S.

Well, I have an 09 TDi and let me tell you it is the best car I've ever owned. That little diesel could tow my JK up any hill. Fully loaded with family, roof rack with loaded rocket box, and bunch of Ikea junk in trunk. 90+mph up Flagstaff pass. Overall trip mpg of 37 and that with only 200 miles on it. If/when they come out with a diesel JK in this country (hopefully better option than blutec option) I will trade in my 09 Jk for one of those. As it is now, I'm lucky to get 17mpg and can't tow more than a paper clip. Although it is way better than my old XJs'
