I have a 2007 Jeep Wrangler 4-door and I recently started investing some money in much needed trail upgrades (rocker armor and front and rear bumpers) and I'm trying to find a solid, reliable winch to aid in self recovery. I'd love a Warn 9.5I but they seem very expensive. can anyone recomend (or stear me clear) of the Ramsey, Mile Marker and Superwinch brands?
Thanks ahead of time!

my ramsey has served me well for about 10 years now... although they can't seem to be able to make paint stick cuz I've never seen one that had the original paint on it!

thanks- I was looking at a Ramsey too- I can't seem to find exactally what I want- 9500 line pull, low(er) profile and a synthetic rope (to keep the weight down).
Not sure such a mad creation is available for direct purchase...

I would recommend the Smittybilt if you are on a budget. I've had mine since they first came out, and it has worked flawlessly. I've not been easy on it either, it's been underwater, covered in inches of ice, and drug my YJ off rocks (I got hi-centered). My dad also has one on his TJ and it has never had any problems either. It does sound really odd though. The affordable winch review JP did was dead on when they said it sounded funny.

I got mine at Truck and Jeep Fest 2008. Haven't got a chance to use it. Can't find any trails.
Now they also offer synthetic rope.

THIS is a good place to at least start (note: There are six pages of winches). Warn, Ramsey, and even Superwinch make some high-quality useable winches that are not painfully slow or underpowered.

Wow! Thank you all for your insight. It sounds like overlooking Smittybuilt may have been a pretty big mistake! As I learned my new winch bumper will not be on my truck until around December (apparently Shrockworks custom-builds all their bumpers after order- would have been nice to know that before I dropped 3K for the front and rear sets!) I've got some time to do research and nail down the right one.
One last question- is a 9500 pull-line winch enough for a 4-door wrangler with body armor? I think is should be, but I've been wrong before...

Depends on the weight of your Wrangler loaded. The guideline is that your rated line pull on your winch should be a minimum 1.5 times the weight of you vehicle. The curb weight I found for a 4-door is about 4600 lbs. So unless you plan on carrying a few thousand pounds of gear and body armor, I don't see a problem with it. Anyone correct me if I'm wrong though. To make it easier on your winch, you could always run a snatch block and run the cable back to your Jeep. This will effectively double your winch pull, but at the cost of cutting the speed your Jeep will move at while winching in half.
