4.88s are the lowest you can go for the D30/D35. And that's not low enough for the 2.5L for sure. Neither the D30 or D35 is going to live very long with 35s.
The YJ front D30 is awful and much weaker than the D30s in XJs and TJs. The axle shafts are puny two piece shafts and use tiny steering u-joints. The rear D35 is well documented in its failures with 33s, 35s are out of the question.
You have a 31" max tire size drivetrain.
The big problem is not the 2.5L. It's the axles. If they were D44s and you installed 5.13 or 5.38 gears, you'd have a sweet setup for offroad. Don't get sucked into the notion that you need more engine horsepower and start dropping money on power adders. They will never solve the problems. It's all about gearing and the torque that gearing provides, not horsepower!

Chevy axles are a bit wide. They're going to be in the 68" range and your YJ is 61.5". The best axles to swap in are D44s from a Wagoneer. They are almost exactly the same width as your YJ.
You'd want a '80-'82 or '85-'91 Wagoneer front D44, and a Wagoneer rear from a '74-'79 non quadra-trac or '86-'91. The years inbetween the ones mentioned have undesirable traits.
