Has anyone done the do it yourself weld on bead lock kits?  How was your experience?  Do I leave the lip on the stock rim or will it cut my tire?

The lip staying or going depends on the kit. And typically any failure will be dependent on the weld quality. In other words it's up to you. However, most do-it yourself weld-on STEEL beadlocks put the weight of the vehicle on the beadlock bolts. It would be better to have a lip for the tire bead to sit on such as with Champion, OMF, Spyderlock, and Walker Evans beadlock wheels. This way the bolts only do the clamping and failure is less likely.
