I have 304 w/edelbrock 1406 4bbl, edelbrock performer intake, headers, 64 IH T18, new DUI HEI distributor. All polution devices have been removed.

Q1. Does anyone know if the hei vac advance should be connected to the no vac at idle or full vac at idle port on the carb?

Q2. There are two timing marks after 10 deg TDC that I am unable to read, do they continue in increments of five?

Disconnect the vac line and plug it. Set initial timing at idle of 700-900 rpm. I'd put it on the spark vac port. Yep, mine is marked at increments of 5 degrees.

No. The spark vacuum port. Not manifold vacuum port.

I went to the spark vac (no vac @ idle) and set the initial time @ 8 btdc and it's almost there. It still kind of stutters / hesitates a bit when I punch it. So I think I will advance it  a bit more. I found that the base time for the DUI HEI is between 10 & 15. I have the idle set at about 800 rpm. The DUI guys suggested making sure the distrib was getting a full alternator voltage of 14+ and to check and make sure that all ballast or ballast wire connections have been eliminated. I'm not sure my alternator puts out that much.

I really do appreciate your help, this install sure has been a learning experience. Plug & Play is not as advertized, is it? As long as it's ready for elk season next month, I'll be a happy camper.

If you disconnect the vac line, plug it, and then check the timing while reving the throttle and changing the RPM up and down do you see a change at the timing mark? Just making sure the mechanical advance is working.

I do believe you were right, I pulled the rotor cap off to find the weights stuck one under the other. After putting them in their correct position, I set the initial advance to 12 degrees BTDC with the idle set to 600 as per the install instructions from DUI. This coupled with some carb cleaning and leaning out the mix, and holy *** it works like a champ. I have just a very minor amount of hesitation at lower RPMs, but as the RPMs increase so does the performance. I have been told that I am one tooth off on the cam gear, and to beware. At this point would you agree with their assessment?

I'll now try some extremely minor tweaking. I am somewhat hesitant to do anything, but would you suggest at this point?

I have always practiced the KISS method, I don't know why I did not this time. I think I had way to many people with conflicting ideas and advice. No one but you asked the simple questions first, you would not believe some of the ideas and suggestions.

Anyway thanks again, you have been the most help and I sure do appreciate it.
