I recently took my newly purchased '93 YJ out four wheeling. I live in Washington State, there was lots of mud, wet tree roots, wet rock faces and standing water. The Jeep came with 37 X 12.5 X 15 MTR's. This is the first time I have 4 wheeled with this tire and it was very disapointing. It seemed like I could not get any traction at all especially on the wet rock faces, I must admit I did not take the time to air down although my buddy running SSR's didn't either and he was not having the problems I was. The two back tires have about 50% tread left, the fronts about 75% and the spare is brand new. I have only wheeled on swampers in the past and have never been disapointed. I figure my cheapest option to increase the MTRs traction is of course to air down, but these were so bad I truely do not think it will do enough so another option would be to buy one brand new tire of the same and put it and my new spare on the back replacing the 50% tread tires although I hate to spend the money on these tires if I am still going to be so disapointed and just have less money to purchase other tires. I am thinking I may just need to see how much I can get for the MTR's and buy me a new set of SSR's. My gearing, lockers and suspension seem perfectly set up for this size tire so it is even more frustraing not to be able to get any traction. Any/all advise from someone more familiar with the MTR's would be very appreciated!
Take care, Rick.

I don't believe that they are producing the 37s anymore for a 15" rim, so you might not even be able to get another tire if you wanted to. I'd suggest just airing them down and saving your cash until you can afford a set of Swampers.

Awe man you gotta air them down, especially if you are down to 50% tread. I've had great results with the old MT/R in snow, ice, mud, rocks, wet rocks and so on. Overall it's a better tire than the SSRs will ever be. Plus the SSRs have kinda weak 2-ply sidewalls. But, it's true about the 15-inch version of the 37 getting dropped from the lineup with the introduction of the new MT/R.

the ssr's 2 plies are much thicker than the mtr's 3 plies... I've punched holes in both, the mtr took a tree branch the ssr took a sharp rock.
the mtr's stink aired down in my territory also and really stink in deep snow, and mud compared ssr's..
for a daily driver, the mtr's are great, but make more noise than trXus mt's which also exceed the abilities of the mtr's so much, they make the mtr's seem like all terrains.

I'm not a big fan of the MTR's I have Trxus Mt's on what's left of my CJ7. I plan on putting on Lt/285/75/R16's on my stock rims.

Thanks to Craig's list I found a guy that has a set of 4 nearly new 36x12.5x15 Swamper TSL's who is willing to trade straight across for my 5 MTR's!! I am looking forward to getting it out in the mud with the new tires!! Thanks to everyone who shared their opinion in this manner it is much appreciated!! Take care, Rick.

I have a 1990 YJ with a 2.5 and a five speed, running through stock axles 4.10:1 gears, and 31-10.50 X15's. The tires that I am running are Big-O mud terrains, and I have yet to get stuck rock collecting out in the deserts of Arizona and Extreme west Texas, and the mountains of New Mexico. Here in Texas, I live about 50 miles from the Salt Flats just east of Guadeloupe Peak. That salt gets slicker that dog *** on wet grass when wet, and I have yet to get stuck. The proiblem is that there are no Big-O tire stores anywhere near me now, and seeing as I just read the tire story on the new Kevlar MTR's, unless someone here has strong reasons why I should NOT run them for the 50% street driving, and 50% desert salt and sand driving that I do, that is what I will put on the JEEP.
