i bought a lok rite for my dana 35 only to find it is a trac lok rear. great. so my question is would i be able to just buy an open carrier for a dana 35 and just put the lok rite in it and put the ring gear on the new carrier? obviously id get one designed for the correct gear ratio. i cant help but feel like thats too simple a solution. thanks

There's a 50/50 chance that it is that easy.
The additional things that you'd have to do is measure your ring gear backlash after you get the carrier reinstalled. If the backlash is correct, then you should run a gear contact pattern. If the pattern is good and the backlash is correct, you're good to go.
But if the backlash and pattern aren't correct, then you'd need to pull the bearings and make some shim adjustments. And that takes special tools for pulling the bearings to add or subtract shims. You also should be aware of the carrier bearing pre-load requirements. Every housing and every carrier is just a little different and needs to be checked for proper gear "setup".
So the one question you have to ask yourself is...
If you get it back together and it's not right and it needs to be "setup" with different shim packs, will you be able to get it to someone that can finish the job for you?
