i've got a 1980 cj5, 258 and t-176, is there a better straight 6 that will bolt up to the same transmission?

The T176 was used behind both the AMC 258 and the AMC 304 V8 in 1980. Your bell housing will bolt up to either the I6 or the V8. Since the V8 was a stock option, it's a very easy conversion. But, why stop there? The AMC 360 is identical on the exterior, so that will also drop in with minimal effort. The conversion can be done with all factory parts from the junkyard. The 360's are very plentiful also. Practically every Wagoneer and many SJ trucks had a 360 V8.
