CJ Dana 30 axle "C"s will accept a 44 knuckle. But then you have to have inner axle shafts that have the same u-joint ear as the 44 outer stub-shaft. Older syle knuckles and "C"s had the balljoint in the knuckle. Newer, like TJ/YJ/XJ have the balljoint in the "C".
I run an XJ high-pinion Dana 30 in my TJ using a 44 knuckle conversion from Reid Racing and all 44 outers (brakes, steering and lock-out hubs). Click Here for an article.
It cost me a lot and the XJ Dana 30 and most of the Dana 44 stuff was free. Locker, gears, bearings, seals, bushings, hubs, calipers, pads, u-joints, TREs, steering arm, tie rod, draglink, trackbar, and chromoly axle shafts all add up a little at a time. It really does cost over $3000 to have a new custom axle. Probably should have gone with something already built and stronger for the money.
Now, I'm very happy with the brakes and the steering. And the hi-pinion 30 with 30 spline axles is stronger than a Rubicon Dana 44. But, a Rubicon Dana 44 is nothing to brag about.
