I have a 2005 Tj with the 4.0L and the automatic transmission. This morning after backing down the driveway, the transmission would not shift not of reverse. The shifter moves freely and feels like it is no longer connected to anything. Any ideas what could have happened or how to fix it? Thanks,
Eric

linkage fell off... crawl under there and shift it by hand with the e-brake pulled tight, provided it holds well enough, it won't start in any position other than park or neutral when the linkage is connected.
if it's not the lower tranny linkage underneath on the drivers side, it's under the console...

I recently had the same problem with my 05. The cable, that runs from the shifter handle down to the transmission, came loose at the transmission. I used a nylon wire tie to hold in place. Obviously a keeper of some sort either broke or fell off. I suspect it was plastic. Anyone know what this part is called?

The cable-end just snaps onto the ball stud of the shift lever on the transmission. If it comes off again after you put it back on, then you probably need a new cable.
There isn't any other clip that holds it on.
The tie wrap will hold it on, just don't tighten it. Just enough to hold the cable-end on the ball stud without causing too much friction. Also use a high quality cable tie. Inexpensive tie wraps don't hold up in the automotive environment. Make sure it's rated for solvent, heat, and uv protection.

Thanks for the help guys. It was easy to fix with a $6 bushing from the local auto parts store.
