I think I have a bad u-joint on one of my front axles, but their is no visible damage. I have been running 34in tires on the stock d30 with an auto locker. I thought it was the locker so i removed it. it still pops when I am backing up with the wheels turned. what is the best way to tell it I need new joints? They seem tight is that enough to tell they are still good or could they still be the problem?

What you're describing definitely sounds like an axle u-joint. Jack up the front tires and rotate them with the steering turned lock-to-lock. Have someone trun the steering while you rotate the wheel. You should be able to "feel" the clicking.

mine does that to and i know for a fact that it's not the u-joints (I've broken and replaced both)..... I have decided that it's one or more of my ball joints.... you can check those also when you have the front end in the air...

Not the axle ujoint! I definately sounds like it is on the driver side and has a muffeled sound like it is in my pumpkin. Going to pop the cover off in the next couple weeks. If it is not my spider gears what could it be? Their is no slack in my wheel when I jack it up so I assume it isn't my balljoints and I just put a new wheel bearing assembly on that side as well. Any one ran into something similar?
