fourwheel drive lever stuck

Hi I just purchased a 1989 cherokee xj and the fourwheel drive lever is stuck. Is it the linkage or the transfer case? The man I purchased it from said the 4x4 worked when he parked it a year ago..

Probably the linkage. If you disconnect it from the transfer case, you can shift it into 4X4 with a pair of pliers by ease. While I had it off, I'd soak it in penetrating oil overnight and try working it around.
