T-150 to T-176

I have a 79 CJ-5 with the 258, T-150, and Dana 20. I've been thinking about swapping the T-150 for the four speed and wanted to know if the T-176 would bolt right in. Is the T-176 much longer than the t-150? The Jeep has 2.5 inches of lift and the rear driveshaft is already at a pretty good angle. Any help would be much appreciated.

The T176 bolts up to the Dana 300 transfer case which is a completely different bolt pattern than the Dana 20 in your Jeep. Get the T176 with the Dana 300 attched, that would be a big upgrade to the Dana 20. Novak and Advance Adapters does not make an adapter for the T176/Dana 20 combo, so that should tell you how much sense it makes.
Not sure there is much of an advantage to the T176 though. The T176 does have a lower 1st gear so you'd get a little performance increase in 1st (3:1 vs 3.5:1). The T150 is much stronger and neither has an overdrive. The T176 would be a good plan to get a Dana 300 but not a good plan to keep the Dana 20.

the t176 will bolt up just make sure you change the pilot bushing to the one for the t176. because the one for the t150 has a larger hole. the t176 is longer with the dana 300 t-case by at least 2-3 inches. I just got done with that swap in my 81 cj.

Yes, the T176 will bolt up to the 258, but not to the Dana 20 transfer case. I guess my post didn't explicitly say, but is implied by saying get the trans and the Dana 300 together.

Thanks for the advice everyone. About how much longer will my drivetrain be after doing this swap, roughly? I have CV joints in my rear driveshaft, but I'm thinking this swap might max out the angle on the read driveshaft.

The Dana 20 is 10.5" long. The Dana 300 is either 10.5" ('80) or 11.5" ('81+). The T150 is 9.25". The T176 is 12.9".
So a T176/Dana 300 combo will be about 3.75"-4.75" longer than a T150/Dana 20 combo depending on the year of the Dana 300.
