We plan to run a Comanche at Bonneville this year,
hope to go 175mph with a straight 6.  Here is the
picture we sent in with the entry.

Wish us Luck!

And yea, post some specs! If Jeremy Clarkson could only get the Corvette ZR1 up to 170 I want to know what you've done to get it to reach those speeds with a 6 cyl

Specs?   Well it started out A 1988 MJ from Texas, long wheelbase, Metric ton (2200 lb payload cap.) Tremic 5 speed, dana 44 rear, 2 wheel drive, 4.0L engine.   The big changes are in two areas, lowering the truck and the engine upgrade.

To lower the truck we made a special drop axle in the front that moved the spindles up 4", the tires are 25" vs the stock 28", the springs are also a little shorter so we have a total drop in the front of about 7".  In the rear we took out the leaf springs and went with a 4 link and coil over shocks.  it is also down about 7"

For the engine we got a 1992 WJ 4.0L block and bored it to 4", the crank is a 258 crank from a 1976 cj5 offset ground to a 4" stroke. Custom H beam rods with 2" journals to work with the offset ground crank.  total displacemnt is a little less than 5.0L. 12.5 compression ratio. Hesco Aluminum head with oversize valves and special porting.   Billet solid roller cam and Hesco gear drive for cam and external oil pump. Custom ITB intake and 40" long headers.  Haltech EFI controller.

The engine in not fully assembled yet, but we used EA pro to prove our design and simulate different configurations.

Here is what we settled on

Here is a picture of the Hesco gear and oil pump drive, this is not mine, this engine has a dry sum system, we will be running a wet sump.

Jeremy Clarkson only had 1 mile to get up to speed  (standing mile) .  The top speed runs (Flying mile) you have 2 miles to get up to speed.  The corvette is capable of much more than 170 MPH.

In 1986 the Jeep factory team ran Comanches at ElMirage ( the LSR1) and Bonneville ( the LSR2).  They set several records including a record of 141mph in the flying mile.  This was with a 4.0L with some work done to it.  It had between 250 and 300 hp. These retired jeep guys cant seem to remember.

In 1989 Gale banks went to Bonneville with a GMC S15 pickup and set a record of 198MPH with a bored and stroked 4.3 (5.0l) V6  He returned the follining year with the "Syclone"  and set a record of 204mph.  The records were set with the USAC which no longer sanctions land speed records.   The record in our class with the SCTA ( Southern California Timing association) is only 148 MPH.   I do not think it will be any problem to break that record, but we really want to break the Banks record and have the Jeep as the fastest small pickup with a gas engine.
