Without going to a V-8, what is the proverbial "best" choice for power. My XJ had the 2.8 four banger and someome shoe horned an I6 into it. It is a project (not running) I purchased and plan to continue. With all that I have learned so far, it appears that I may want to stay with the I6 it has. Would a V6 be a better choice as the I6 in the XJ only has two electric fans and no room for additionals. You opinions are welcome. Thnx

The Chev 2.8L V6 was only in XJs until '86. It's not a 4cyl. Maybe it had a 2.5L 4cyl? And the 4.0L uses an engine driven fan and an electric fan. But, doesn't make much difference.
You're dealing with a lot and none of it makes sense from a non-emotional perspective.
XJs are cheap, and the majority of them have the 4.0L already. There is no way that you can justify the time or the money to finish your project. Look on you local Craigslist. You'll find many really nice and a lot newer XJs for $2000-$4000. Many will have a lot of the extras that you should be concentrating on that you'll be able to pickup for pennies on the dollar.
No, this is not your father talking to you... it's somebody who's been there, done that.

Advise noted and thank you. However, if I were to go forward with this project, what would be a direction to go. Back to the V6 or the 4cyl(is, what one? Buick, GM...), or maybe a small V8. Would a FORD 255cid V8 fit? Just curious.
P.S. Did I mention that I don't know jack about Jeeps. Vee Dubs, Ya, I got it.
