mj 4x4 spring under lift kit

The June 2009 issue mentions axle wrap problems with a soa lift. Does anyone make a 5" lift kit that isn't soa for the Comanche?

If you really study the article, you can pull out the causes of axle wrap when doing a spring-over conversion. Keep in mind the key word "conversion".
There are many, straight from the factory, spring-over setups that do not have axle wrap issues. The MJ sister XJ, for one.
It's important that the perches, shackle length and angle, u-bolts, and leaf springs all be designed for the increased forces that exist when mounted in a spring-over configuration.
YJ springs are frequently used for many different applications of spring-over conversions. They are a great example of the wrong spring to use and frequently introduce axle wrap. That's because the YJ spring is flat and supple. But, these are the characteristics that you want for a flexy, nice riding suspension. There are always tradeoffs. So, you have to control the wrap in other ways, namely a torque arm. That doesn't make spring-over bad, it's just something that needs to be addressed.
There are many bad examples of torque arms that just tear themselves off the axle. But, it is possible to build or buy one that is very effective at controlling axle wrap that does not self destruct.
Keep in mind that MJ springs are not YJ springs. MJ springs have a higher spring rate and more arch. Both of these things will help in avoiding axle wrap if you stay with your MJ springs.
An MJ spring-over that might be worth looking into is built by Rocky-Road. They claim to address any axle wrap issues by using very long perches. Click Here for more info.

This might be the first (and only?) time that I will disagree with Giles, but I have not had very good luck with parts or service from Rocky Road.
I do agree with everything that he says about springovers though and the need for a traction bar. Another difference between YJ springs and MJ springs is the length. MJs have one of the longest spring packs ever offered on a Jeep. This means that you can use thicker leaves (that provide more carrying capacity and resist axle wrap) but leverage will still allow them to provide a good ride.

I had custom SOA springs built by Alcan Springs for my XJ and CJ and I don't have any issues with axle wrap. The XJ has 5.7L LT1 and the CJ a 5.9L EFI engine , so there's plenty of torque to bend the springs. No wrap, no bouncing, no sag.
If you don't want SOA, Alcan will build you a 5" lift spring for your Jeep. Every spring they do is custom to your Jeep. You tell them the length, weight of your accessories, size of your cage, amount of tools you carry, etc. Then you get a spring built and delivered.
