it should be a dana 35 or a chrysler 8.25 it should be stamped on the diff cover if it is a dana 35

8.25's were used infrequently in earlier XJ's and exclusively in later XJ's. The easiest way to tell is to look at the bottom of the housing, not the cover.
The 8.25 and Dana 35 covers look very similar, so look at the bottom of the housing from the rear. Notice the obvious "flat" vs "round" bottom edge.
