so I'm swapping in a 305/700r4/231c into my 88 wrangler. Can anyone tell me how to wire up the neutral safety and reverse lights? I'm new here and new to jeeps so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

that's all in/on the shifter.... the gm rigs have the switch mounted at the base of the steering column on those with a column shifter.

the ns switch also has the reverse light switch in it. no wires on the trans it'self..
what shifter are you using in the jeep?

You're kind of going back and forth with your question. There are wires on the trans that need to be hooked up in order for it to run properly. But the neutral/safety/backup switch is not on the trans, so that makes your question a little confusing.
Depending on the year of your motor/trans combo, there could be 2 wires or 4 wires. And there could also be a VSS generator if your motor and trans are from a late '80s or '90s Camaro.
If your motor/trans is early to mid '80s and not a TBI, it will have two wires that control the Torque Converter Clutch. Part of the TCC wiring will include the brake pedal switch. That way the TCC will unlock when you apply the brakes.
If it's a TBI setup, then there are some more things to talk about.
Also, one of the most important things to be concerned with is the Throttle Valve cable. If the TV cable is not adjusted correctly and/or not hooked up to the correct linkage, your trans will burn up very quickly.

the 305/700r4 is out of a 1990 chevy 1500 4x4 this is a TBI setup but I'm switching to an edelbrock carb. Im going to use the stock column shifter in the 88 jeep. I know about adjusting the TV cable that it has to be fully extended at full throttle.

If you're ditching the ECM, then how are you going to contol the lock-up torque converter? Normally the ECM grounds the TCC solinoid which has a constant 12V going to it. The brake switch is an input to the ECM, which then un-grounds the TCC solinoid, unlocking the TCC.
Locking the TCC can be a big plus with regard to fuel economy and allows the trans to operate at a much lower temperature. And cooler is definitely better. Also it's a 4L60 if it's a '90, btw.
TCI (part #376600) has a TCC wiring harness for conversions like you're doing. It Costs about $75. It's a lock-up switch that uses engine vacuum to make decisions.

let's narrow this down here.... does it even have a TV cable?
the 700 does, the 4l60E does not...

If it's a '90 then it's a 4L60. The "early" 4L60E didn't come out until '93. They just changed the name in '90. It is still substantially the same as an updated 700R4 which is different from the "late" 4L60E released in '97.

you can take all the parts out of a late 4l60E and put em in a 83" 700r4 except the valve body..

Yup, I'm talking externals... The central part of the case is similar, but the tailhousing bolt pattern is different and a removable bell housing.
