I have a '99 TJ with a 4" lift and 35in. BFG's. I want to install a set of 4.88 gears to improve all around performance. I am wondering if a ring and pinion set is all I need to buy or if there are other components involved that will have to be changed as well. Can anybody set me in the right direction on this?

It's always a good idea to use an install kit that includes new bearings, crush sleeves (TJ Dana 30 and 35, but not Dana 44), ring gear bolts, and pinion nut.

The ring gear bolts, crush sleeves, and pinion nuts must not be re-used. The bearings can be re-used, but why risk a $300 labor bill for $50 worth of bearings per axle.

Thanks for the info. ftgiles, that makes perfect sense and is exactly what I was wondering. Luckily, I do have the dana 44 rear so I guess I won't need the crush sleeves there. I guess it's time to shop for the install kits. Thanks again.

yukon has the best most complete install kits,

they give plenty of shims of several different sizes

You'll want what most call a Master Install Kit along with the gears.

gotcha i was watching extreme 4x4 and he's setting up a 44 thats where i got the idea for shims and pinion bearing pressure. do you set your crush sleeve with the new nut all in one shot?must set preload in increments i imagine or over torque and its off to the parts house for a new sleeve.

lol, yep, a good set up kit comes with two crush sleeves. I use an impact gun to crush the sleeve with the new nut, lots of anti seize on the threads, silicone on the pinion splines and a dial type inch pound torque wrench, a clicker won't work for preload.

when all the play is gone start checking the preload, once the sleave crushes it'll load up the bearing in a hurry. I generally load new bearing on the high side of spec, by the time you set the bearing and spin the ring gear rechecking the pattern it gets loose.
