I need any articles, books, recomendations for helping in this. I have a 79 jeep j20 pickup with a amc 360. the j20 is stock for the most part with a 2 in lift and 33x12.5 mut terrain. I am having the heads rebuilt on the 360 as we speak but once i get it up to mayryland i am going to begin the motor and possibly transmission swap.

I have spent some time on line looking for how to manuals or sights that focus on such a task but for the most part have been unsuccessful. I am curious if this has ever been done (I am sure someone has) I need any suggestions or remcomendations.

more specifically, is there a recommended v6 that will be an easy transplant? i would like to use an inline 4.o liter 94' or earlier model. Will the transmission that is in the truck now mount up with this in line 6 or will i need to get different trans? will I need to switch drive shafts out? the truck is full time fourwheel drive but i will be installing lockouts.

Please let me know if you have ever heard of doing this, what motor was used, problems? exct..

Pictures to follow......stay tuned.

For the last few months in Jp Magazine, Hazel has been putting a 4.0L in his FSJ. I'm not sure if he really finished it, but what ever the reason, the 4.0L wasn't enough to make him keep it. He sold it. I'm sure he had lots of vehicles to sell if he needed the cash, so why that one? He was right in the middle of a build-up. IDK?

Why would you want to replace the 360 with an I6???? The specific vehicle has more to do with fuel economy than the engine, so I hope you don't say it's to save on fuel costs.

Put a Howell fuel injection unit on the 360 and upgrade the ignition to an HEI system and you'll pick up several miles to the gallon and have a really nice and powerful motor.

sadly, thats what i was going for, but seems as though i might not have done all my homework. another reason is that i am not sure just how bad the motor is in it right now. i drove it from Myrtle Beach to North East Ky and used 12 quarts of oil......... let that sink in for a minute.. I know that the rings are probably shot, among other things but I am waiting on the diagnosis from my mechanic on just how bad it is..... I lost compression long before the trip started and it was running like *** and pumping oil from intake manifold, overflow tube comming from valve cover and then from the oil dipstick tube itself..... well see...

this is a pick of the truck in Ky. well see how bad it is but for the moment, I am going to look into the fuel injection system and the ignition. if the heads arent scarred or nothing too serious i will definately look into keeping the motor as is...any other suggestions? I would love to keep the 360 in there ill keep you posted, thanks for the info..
