I'll definitly plan on doing the relays, even though the 2005 fan speed switch looks beefier. The 2005 switch is definitly better, it makes that "ting" sound like a real switch is supposed to make and there is quite a bit more metal to it.
2001 Model
- Small, mostly plastic speed switch. Similar to what is equipped in "Power Wheels" (I used to get pickup scrap Power Wheels and brought them back to life by repairing their switches then giving them away to less fortunate kids). - 4 mounting holes to mount control housing into dash. - single screw to mount speed switch

2005 Model
- Robust speed switch. Mostly metal. Similar to what is equipped in military equipment. - two mounting holes to mount control housing to dash. ( two less screws...odd the bumper I purchased from MC had two less screws than the 2001 bumper for mounting the bumper caps..I bet Jeep used the money they saved on the 4 screws to purchase real switches to put in the 2003-2006 models...) - Uses two screws to mount the speed switch - temp knob feels like they used a different pot (switch) as well, it "clicks".

I tested the 2005 version without relays just to see... Both switches get really flippin' hot, so I'll probably wind up incorporating 5 relays instead of 4. 1 (4)for each speed and one for the supply (AC/Heater selector switch).
Anybody have a copy of the schematic? I'm sure the one the Hyanes manual isn't exact.
