I am looking to buy a Jeep, and was wondering the most important things to look for. In general which engine, trans, axles and what years were they offered or introduced? I was looking for a 6 cylinder,5speed and more than likely will never put anything tire wise bigger than 35's on it.I also want the soft top. hey Thanks a bunch Lee

The more important details are how much do you want to spend and what part of the country are you in,this will determine whats available in good condition.also will you drive it every day or is it a trail rig?Are you able to fix things yourself or will you pay a shop? You probably want fuel injection so that puts you in a 94 or newer wrangler, the 96 and up tj tends to have better parts but still has axles that aren't recomended for that size tire. give us more details and you'll get better answers.

Okay my question was kinda vague. I can do alot of the work myself.Yes fuel injected is a definite yes.I guess a better question would be is what size of tire can I put on say a 96 wrangler. This Jeep won't see much hard offroading. I have about 5 miles of serious well graded but very muddy roads just to get to my house. It won't see any rock crawling and most of the rest will be just enjoy driving. Thanks Lee

A 2000-2004 TJ Wrangler Sport with the drivetrain you've described would be a good start. Look for one with the Dana 44 rear axle.

Hey they first put fuel injection in wranglers when they introduced the 4.0 in 1990. Not 1994. I agree with Cappa about the TJ.

The 4.0L was introduced in '87 and was controlled by the RENIX injection system. The RENIX motors were in the XJ Cherokees through 1990.

The Wrangler never used the RENIX 4.0L motor. It used the 258 I6 through 1990.

In 1991 Chrysler's injection system replaced the RENIX system and that was the first year for the 4.0L in the Wrangler, not 1990. The XJ also got the new Chrysler injection in 1991.

But, even 1991 was not the first year for fuel injection in the Wrangler. That would be 1987, the first year of the Wrangler. And it was...

you guessed it, or maybe not, the RENIX AMC 2.5L TBI.

I miss typed on the 1990 thing. And the 2.5 didn't even cross my mind because he said he was looking for a 6cyl.

Yep you're both right fuel inj. did arrive before 94,what i was thinking but didn't print is the 94 and up yj's have better transmissons and better injection so that would be a better starting point.plus the galvanized body tubs started around then right?

Jeep found out really quick that the Peugeot BA-10 5spd was problematic. It really only lasted one year, 1987. In 1988 it started to be replaced by the AX15, but even some '89's still had the BA-10.

The AX15's goofy internal slave cylinder was moved outside the bell housing in 1994, and 1995 was the first year to have a fully galvanized body and the bigger 297-x front axle u-joints.
