Ok here is the deli ma. Im getting a 74 K10 from my dad for next to nothing I would like to put the axels underneath my YJ. My question is can i put in the dana 44 front in upside down and install reverse cut ring and pinion in there since the pumpkin is on the wrong side? Would modifying it be too much work. I love freebies and want to make this work for cheap.

not sure if it would work but making the rear steer work will be very expensive

Hi-pinions are not just flipped over. They're a different casting. Look at the cover of a lo-pinion and a hi-pinion. They're oriented the same way. If you flipped it over, you'd have oiling problems. Late '70's and '80's Fords are one of the few hi-pinion Dana 44's.
If you're into cheap, that means finding the right parts and not paying too much. Free parts that aren't right, aren't cheap. They usually end up being very expensive.
The cheap Dana 44 swap into your YJ is a '85-'91 Wagoneer front. The diff is on the driver's side and the width is only about an inch wider than the YJ axle. It's a very easy swap.

Ok I never said anything about a hi-pinion,ford or about rear steer. Please read what I posted. How would it cause oiling problems? The oil is flung by the gears? Can I have my question answered? Instead of going on about things I didnt even ask?

The reference to a Ford is for you to look at the difference between a hi-pinion and a low-pinion Dana 44 so that you can see they are not just flipped over. There is actually a sump for the oil. If it were flipped over, it wouldn't hold much oil and the pinion bearings would not be lubricated.
And there is positive caster set into the knuckles which would become negative caster if it were flipped over.
It just isn't a reasonable swap at all!

He means flip it over. Move the diff from the right side to left side, not install the front axle into the rear of the YJ.

Reverse cut does not mean reverse rotation.
Reverse cut is also synonymous with hi-pinion.
Front differential ring gears are driven on the opposite side of the pinion gear than it would be in a rear application. That's why the front spins in the opposite direction.
This is not the strongest gear mesh. So, they came up with a high-pinion and cut the gears in the opposite direction to gain strength for the front. That makes a high-pinion front just as strong as a low pinion rear. If the front is lo-pinion then it's using the same gear cut as the rear and strength is lost.

Thank you all you could have said is the caster would end up jacked to hell. I know a high pinion and regular set up. Please dont try to over explain thing.

Actually everyone missed the real reason you can't just flip an axle over....it will spin and drive backward of normal.
For example: If you took a rear axle out of a truck, flipped it over and rewelded perches, overfilled it with oil...and then tried to run it, your truck would go backwards in First, Second, Third ...gears and forward when you shifted into reverse.
So, no, you can't do this to your front axle.

I already mentioned changing the direction the axels turned.

Oh, you know everything?
And your question about putting in a reverse cut gear set was going to fix a rotation problem? You don't have a clue.
Over explaining something to someone who already knows everything is easy to do for sure. Please forgive my effort to answer such a simple question that you already knew the answer to.

Wow, I guess this will be my first post. I have to agree with ftgiles. All the information is there. In laymans terms what he is trying to say is "You can't build a chevy engine with some free ford parts" reverse cut is not reverse rotation. I can remember an old "Junk Yard Wars" episode that covered this so a 1st grader could understand it. And try to understand that the 90W is not just "sloshing around" especially in a high pinion*. You need to consider a different swap.
