Also, I am not sure about the computers but i do have some sort of control modual on my cj. It also has (had) all the emission control crap on it, and its an 83. Not saying its as complicated as some computer tings found today but it is there. Realy though, i think the computers on the newer vehicles are less complicated that on the older ones. they are not as much of a jumbled mess under the hood and they have far beter diagnostic capabilites to boot. if you are buying a new jeep it is probably pretty simple compared to say an older chevy ,dodge or ford. My wifes 05 grand cherokee is verry simple as far as wireing goes compared to the 93 chevy s10 that i used to have.

This too is my first JEEP (had a FJ40 years ago though). truth is plush they are not but have come a very long way, as a dayly driver get the UNLIMITED (a bit more smooth due to the longer wheel base), will last a very very long time but will have a few quirks, it is not an SUV (SUV's have a smoother carlike ride unless you get the small ones which can be a bit harsh for the avg person), will take you anywhere you want to go and more (unless the bug really bites hard you wont need to modify it for you probably won't climb the RUBICON and will probably spend 95% of your time on pavement) they are fairly reliable but easy to fix (even HONDA has bad cars) drinks as much fuel as a minivan so don't expect economy. It's the coolest thing you can get for under 30 grand with a ragtop (BTW I traded a 2007 Magnum for it and although I wish I could still have my maggie, there's no way I'll give up the Jeep) when it comes to dealerships you don't have to be stuck with only one, I bought the jeep in one dealership for the price buy accesories from another (just hapen to have stock plus better $) and do service with whoever treats me the best that month (people are people and you might get bad service ocationaly from even the best one).  So go ahead if you don't  mind a bit of a rough ride (by car or even truck standards) not as plush as a SUV (Jeeps are Jeeps period, and by that I mean CJ/YJ/TJ/JK sorry but the others in the line up even though trail rated are SUV's nothing wrong with that but not the same feel) and a few quirks ( I guess that's the "it's a jeep thing" comes into play)and buy one as for the dealer you know what to do and waranty term just by extended.

Good luck

Sorry should have kept reading the thread but hey what can i say.  Like you I also saw the complaints but if you read the dates as well as the TSB's they are mostly for the first builds (always happens) as they get into the second and third year of a new design most of those things get taken care of.  Mine has never had a leak, or a malfunction and am very pleased with it. Fit and finish is what i expected (not perfect but good) and they could improve on it, Engine power is adequate (yes it is slow on the paved roads compared to other vehicles but remember what it is designed for and when it's out there there's nothing like it even if you don't have 4.10 gears and 4:1 low)  if you tow make sure you get the towing package, other than that you will be fine with the basic gearing it offers (plus you could save a couple of bucks in fuel.  If planning to build your machine, don't get every bell and wistle 'cause you'll probably end up scraping most of it for the bigger better aftermaket (no pun intended but aftermaket parts trully are a bit and sometimes alot better due to their specialty and not to take care of the avg. joe/Jane buyer like Chrysler has to)BTW the fredom top seals elctrical mishaps were taken care of by mid build for 2008 model year and freedom top and hood hinges for the 2009's. Will this garantee that your brand new Wrangler will be perfect....NO, but there's a greater odd that you won't have any of those problems (again, crap happens sometimes and even the best have bad ones)

OK.  Here's the deal with the Wrangler JK. (I have an early 2007).

This is the first Jeep to have elaborate computer control.  There's traction control and roll control, with all the rate gyros and computer-controlled ABS that implies. There were three recalls for software problems in the first year, and if those haven't been done, annoying failures happen.  One failure mode is a computer restart, where the engine quits and restarts, the transmission downshifts, all the dashboard lights light up, and the CD player stops.  Another failure is oversensitive roll limiting, where at speeds as low as 25 mph on moderate curves, the roll control will kick in and slow the vehicle down.  This all goes away after the recalls.

There's also a service bulletin about a rubbing noise in the front wheel hubs. If you hear noises from there, check that out; it's a repair covered under warranty.

The JK handles much better on freeways than previous models.  You can drive the thing comfortably at 65-70 all day, unlike the older models.  There's an annoying suspension pitch resonance that hits around 40mph on highways with the right cement slab spacing, like I-5 in California.  5mph slower or faster and it goes away.

If you're over 6' tall, the slight extra legroom and tilt-wheel of the JK are a necessity. If I drive an older Wrangler, my knees are wrapped around the wheel.

The fibreglas top is nice.  It's watertight enough that there's no leaking in a car wash.  But all those rubber seals could be damaged if you're not careful when removing the sunroof or top.  Getting both the fibreglas top and the ragtop clutters up the interior with too much stuff; pick one or the other.

The short 3-year warranty on early '07 models sucks, but '08 models got the long warranty.
