I am going to purchase a Jeep Wrangler nest month. I would prefer a hard top but from what I have been finding those arent as available with the style I want. So if I get a Jeep that comes with a soft top can I purchase an after market hard top? Duh I know I can but what must the Jeep be equiped to have one? I read somewhere else that half door Jeeps cant have hard tops added, is that true? Then I live in Illinois where are winters are mostly icy roads and snow packed so is there any problems I could encounter driving a Jeep year round? Thanks in advance

My advice, get a Jeep with hard top and full doors. Some folks down here in Texas like their soft tops till winter comes, you see 'em driving around in coveralls. Let us know if you hear of a good deal on a senate seat.

Get the Hardtop or dual top option. You'll like it better during the winter months.

I run a soft top with Half Steel doors. Durn heater will run me out even when it 10 degrees outside. The only cold weather issues I've had onmy '01 TJ: - The rear window. I may as well forget unzipping it once the temps get below 45. Its a pain trying to zip it back up - I live in Oklahoma, driving into a 20mph head wind at 70mph, the upper doors won't stay sealed and has a tendancy to let a draft in, but the heater dose a good job keeping up.
As for a Hard top suggestion, stay away from the 3 piece tops. A buddy of mine had leaking issues on his '08 Unlimited Sahara when he took the top off and put it back on. He also met a few other owners with the same problem. He took in for warranty shortly after the leak appeared. After screwing around with it for two months or so... they offered him a softtop under warranty.

A jeep dosen't have to be specially equipped for a hardtop. The 1/2 steel door models can also have hardtops. You can use the original cloth upper door and you can also get a upper hard door with slide windows that Best Top has available. As for winter driving its basically like driving an ol short wheel base vehicle on ice. Keep in mind if you get a Rubicon or jeep equipped with lockers. Do not use your lockers on Ice.
