I've noticed that they have recovery hooks that can work with a trailer hitch. Is it advisable to use such a recovery hook or is it better to utilize one that mounts to the frame?

Trailer hitches are usually rated for way more then the Jeep, and are mounted to the frame already. It's a personal choice.. Both are fine.

Depending on the frame type, the trailer hitch mounted recovery point can have an advantage by spreading the force equally across both frame rails. You can actually diamond the frame by only pulling on one corner. More common with CJ's than YJ's or TJ's.
