what a stroke of luck, i cant get a chevy 350 with a 700r4 for nothing. its out of a 2wd truck. is th 2wd ok? if so, i know im lookin at alot of money to put it in and stuff but thats fine. will this fit ok in a 97 tj? what else is gonna have to be changed to make it all work? and what else will i need to take outa the truck along with the engine and tranny for it to work. any first hand experience?
second, i can get a ford 8.8 with 4.1 gears for nothing as well. (gotta love having motorhead friends) will this hold up with a 350? i do mostly trail driving but like to play in the mud too. (i dont play too hard) running just baby 30" tires but will eventually get bigger 33's to 35's.
finally- if this engine swap does happen, will the d30 front hold up? atleast for a little while, long enough to get another axle?

4wd hardware sells everything you need to make the engine fit you will need a tranny out of a 4wd truck tho. and the transfer case-the ford 8.8 should up fine

You just need to remove the tailshaft housing and install the 4x4 short shaft in the trans. A tranny shop will dump it and install it for you for $50. No big deal for them.
Or get Mudb8 to stop by in the big truck. His dad woked on automatics for a living and made Dave put them back together if he wanted supper. Most of us just had to clean up our room.

another question, using the auto trany, what do i do about the shifter? the truck its in now has the shifter in the column, am i going to have to do that as well or it doesnt matter whether its that or a shifter on the floor? id prefer on the floor but wutever works or whatever is cheaper

It would definitely be easier to use a cable operated floor shifter.

the case of 4x4's are cast thicker in key areas. other than that the 2wd is fine to use tho if it's gonna get abused yer better off to use a 4x4 case.
changing the shaft is very simple actually, you'll need a new pump gasket is all, it can be disasembled with the valve body left on with little difficulty.
personally I'd use the 231, 241 or 208 and put a sye on it. the auto shift, all wheel drive has a viscus clutch in it..

For a shifter, don't skimp. Get a lokar shifter. It takes the hassel out of the auto conversion, & mine fit in factory location in the 97 jeep tj's floor using manuel boot & molding. Plus once adjusted, its rock solid & works every time.
ohhhh!! sooo!!! AWESOME

sounds good. final question, for now, the jeeps got no lift, and i'd rather lift it after the engine swap, is that ok?

The front D30 will outlast the rear D35 without question. The front D30 is very capable for its size and is not usually ever subjected to the same shock loads as the rear.

Lift is good or do the diy highline fenders on the cheap. That will get you 35's with no lift I think.
The gauge cluster is another issue you will have to bypass. This is easily done. Ill shoot a photo of a tj dash that has a 5.3 in it.
D30: I would not hold my breath to much. With the smaller tires you will be fine I think. Don't put any money into it though.
I break stuff.

gotcha. i plan on doin the highline fender, and puttin bigger tires, but that would come after. i was just wondering if the lack of a lift would interfere with the engine install at all. or with the exhaust. would i have to replace the gauges or just change wiring around? andwith the d30, wuts a good replacement, with in a reasonable price?
