well from the looks of it im beating a dead horse. but im somewhat of a newbi to my recently aquired yj. i was wondering if anyone had some base settings for the carter carb and timing [ settings that work ] when i bought the yj it would idle high [1700+ rpm]. i did a quick rebuild on the carb and set the timing and adjusted the carb to achieve the correct idle speeds. everything runs great at normal operating temp however when cold it wont idle. even with the stepper cam and sole vac idles set to spec at normal operating temp. so currently i can have good cold idle with high idle at temp. or no idle cold and good idle at temp. ive read most of the standard replies to this type of post ie: nutter bypass, tbi, mpi, 4.0 swap, all of which are great solutions to this type of problem but not the direction i currently wish to go. to anyone with some advice your words are greatly appreciated. thanks for the help in advance.

Linkage? Compare the linkage to another carbed YJ. Maybe it's been altered or installed incorrectly sometime in its life. The stepper motor just leans the mixture acording to the o2 readings but only during normal operating temp. It should not affect idle speed.

hey ft. thanks for the advice. checking the linkage lead me to find a bum choke. the thing is getting powered when it needs to be but doesnt move the linkage. so it looks like ill be warming it up by foot in the morning till i get this new problem fixed. hey thanks for the insight. i hope to get the jeep running good before it starts snowing.

convert to a manual choke. Plus it gives you another knob to play with. It's much better on your motor too than the foot feed heater.
I break stuff.
