I got a nsg370 to swap into my 4.0 '00 wrangler to replace the 3550 cause the syncronizers are going bad.  The problem i have is the bellhousing is wrong.  It's from an '05 Liberty with a 3.7.  What am I missing here.

It seems like you figured it out after the fact...

The 3.7 Chrysler pattern'd bell housing won't fit your 4.0L AMC pattern'd bell housing block. You'll need an NSG370 from a '05 or '06 Wrangler with the 4.0L only.

The 2.4L in the Wrangler is also a Chrysler pattern'd bell housing block, and the 2.5L in the Wrangler is a Chevy small pattern'd bell housing block, so don't make that mistake either.

You should probably do a little research before you buy parts. It's not just a simple bolt in, even with a 370 from a Wrangler 4.0L. You may want to just replace your 3550 with another 3550 or replace your synchros if you're not up to the conversion.

Ok thanks. Now that im probably stuck with the trans for a while.  Would there be another one that you could recomend.  I have found that the 370 isn't exactly up to a lot of power in case I ever do a 350 swap. Will the 3550 hold up to 350 power if i ever decide to go that route or should i go with a 4500 or even something else.  I don't wheel as much as i would like, but i do a lot of highway driving too.  I've got 4 inches of lift and 33s.  I was looking at Novak Adapters and found a couple 4 speeds but i don't know if i want to give up that extra gear.  Since the lift its kinda sluggish on the road which i figured i would need to regear it eventually.  How hard is it to replace the synchros?

There is nothing wrong with the 3550 for a V8 conversion. It's not the smoothest, most quiet transmission, but a good transmission for sure.

The 370 is not some great transmission. It's not super strong. The biggest reason it exists is not because of great specific application, but came about for general application.

The close ratio gears allow it to be used in many applications behind many engines. It's a Mercedes box and stuffed into a bunch of Chrylser products just so they only needed one tranny. It made good manufacturing sense.

Don't get cought up in the sexy, it's not worth it.

You'll not notice anything much as far as performance in your Jeep. You'll just be shifting a little more.

The 4500 is also a dog in a Jeep V8 conversion. It too is expensive and sexy. It's too big, case wise, and it's too long for good drive line angles.

Fix your 3550, put gears in your axles, and save your money and efforts for your V8!
