I'm guessing your D44 is out of a Wagoneer that had the Borg Warner Quadra-Trac.

A Wagoneer without the Quadra-Trac has a centered rear D44 up to 1979 and then again from '86 to '91. That's a good swap and is real close to the right width.

The Wagoneer D44 is a good swap. It's a lot stronger than a TJ D44 and has a good width. The 1 ton stuff you mention is big and heavy. Is it too big for you? Are you running 37" or larger tires?

They weigh like 50 pounds more than a D44 and use up a lot of ground clearance... They're BIG.

Well if you want 39's, you'd definetly want 1 tons. Do you like full size width?

So it's 8-lug...or 5-lug.

If it's 8-lug, you can't beat the price of a GM 14-bolt (at least on the west coast they are cheap). Or a Dana 70HD or 70U would be sweet too. The 70HD and 70U are the easiest to get parts for if I remember right.

If the front axle is 5-lug I'd go for a Ford 9-inch from a '74-'86 F-150/Bronco 4x4 or 2x4 F-150 Camper Special. Both should have 31-spline shafts and will be 65 inches wide to match the front. Watchout though, most two-wheel-drive F150s have 28-spline shafts. However they can be converted to 31-, 33- or even 35- and 40-spline with bolt-on parts.

Might as well go to discs then. Try TSM. They have good easy to install disc brake kits.
