Have you seen the Garmin Quest II. Jeep sells it under the name Trail Guide. It mounts in the top tray of the dash. I have this and it works really well. You can carry it along when hiking or put it in the craddle for driving and charging. No cords or windshield suction cups.
You can use Garmin's topo maps with it to show all the hiking trails, unpaved roads and elevation lines.
Jeep sells it for $800. But you can buy the Garmin for less than $400 and buy the mount from Jeep for around $120. That's $520 instead of $800.
I can give you all the sources and part numbers if you want.

I guess it's all about what your mostly using it for, I bought mine because I'm fairly new to the town I live in and don't know where everything is, and most of the streets are numbered but there are different types, for example there is 10th ave, 10th street, etc.. Also for going other places just punch it in and it guides you with maps and voice prompts. I didn't buy mine for trail or hiking, So I went with the TomTom for 149.00$$ and I love it, it tells me my speed, and when on a highway it tells my speed and the speed limit, and lights up in red whenever i'm speeding. So that's why I bought mine, I had gps on my phone 10 dollars a month but it was so hard to see and punch in stuff, the tom tom is very very easy to use and just wanted to to upgrade from my phone's gps. So for me it works great, I don't know much about them i just know It was money well spent for me.
