I have a stock 4x4 '97 xj that needs a motor. All I want to do is replace the stock 4.0L with another one. Do I need to look for specific years or will any 4.0L work. Any and all info is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

There are many subtle differences with the 4.0L through the years. Your best bet is to get one from an XJ of the same year. If you get one from other years, you'll have to swap everything, ignition, sensors, manifolds, front accessories etc. in order to make sure everything is compatale. So, other year's long blocks can work, but not all.

I do know you can't use a 2000 and later block. None of your accessories will bolt on. The water pump and the block bosses changed in 2000. '95-'99 are close and '98 and '99 use a different cam and head.

To make your life easy, stick with an XJ from the same year.

Sorry in advance if I keep asking questions. OK, so is getting a whole engine as a replacement an option or am  still better off trying to get a same year donor? Again, Thanks!

Yes, get a complete engine. Just know if it's not from a XJ of the same year, it won't be as simple, and may flat out not work, like a 2000 and newer.

Simple, only meaning you'll have to strip everything off both motors and put all the old stuff on the new replacement if they're not the same model and year.

I'd only look for a motor from '95-'97, and would strongly recommend only a '97 just to make it simple!

Again many subtle and little things changed from year to year. A '94 power steering pump bracket won't fit '95 and later intake manifolds for example.
