Prerunner XJ Bumper A Bolt-On for Cherokees
By Verne Simons photographer: Verne Simons
For years now, Cherokees have been hitting some serious off-road trails, many without one of the most fundamental recovery tools: a winch. Why? Because few mounting options existed. There were a few integrated winch bumpers, or you could foot the bill for two receivers, some extra wiring, and a sore back. Or you could have an expensive custom winch bumper built to your liking. More recently, several companies have been producing bolt-on winch bumpers for this popular Jeep. We got a hold of a new prerunner style bumper from Truck Farm. The Proto Fab–built Pro Farm Bumper will bolt onto any Cherokee and holds a wide array of winches. We opted for a winch from the Ramsey Platinum series line to take care of pulling duties. The Platinum 9000 offers a 4.8hp heavy-duty electric motor and 150 feet of 5/16-inch galvanized aircraft cable.

That is certainly a nice looking Cherokee bumper, but it does not look like the pictures in the Verne Simons article.
Personally, as one just starting an XJ project, I like it better. The other one that really suites me is the Hanson Offroad front bumper.

I was reading about one of the protofab bumpers for the TJ. They say they send them out, as bare steel for the customer to paint. That's a different approach, and i'm sure a big cost savings. I haven't really done any price comparisons on bumpers. I like the Hanson brand bumpers myself, for the Cherokees anyhow. I haven't seen one for a TJ that I liked. Oh and by the way, did you scroll all the way down that page. They actually have 3 styles of pre runner bumpers for the XJ

I like that. I like a lot of them. The biggest thing that helped me make my decision was weight vs strength.
The one I bought is stamped and then is re-inforced with 3/16" webbing. It weighs a lot less than the ones made by the fab shops.

That's a good point, weight can be a big factor
