Replacing the 249 with a 231 is super easy.
The only thing you have to do is get a 231 with the right input gear.
If you get a '94 or older from a Cherokee or YJ then the input gear in your 249 can be swapped into the 231 if the 231 does not have the right one.
The planetary gearset in '95 and newer changed in the way that the gear pattern is cut and your 249 input gear would not be inrterchangable.
Now, if you get a '95 or newer 231 and it has the right input gear, you're set, just bolt it in. If it's not the right input gear, the appropriate one will cost you $150.
The only way you will know for sure is to drop the transfer case and count the splines and measure how far it sticks out of the front of the tc.
