my effing' doors

The doors on my 97 tj would slip out of the hinges because they were not actually attached, they just sat in the hinges. I now own a 2001 tj and the doors are bolted. I tried removing the nut underneath the hinge with a socket, and not only was it an odd size (somewhere between 1/2 and 9/16"s, probably because the paint) but it snapped off with half the bolt still in it, and the door still wont budge up or down. Is this because my 97 had half doors / soft top and my 2001 has full doors ? or do you just remove those nuts the proper way and the door slips off?

I can't answer the actual question, but I bet they were metric, that is why they were "between 1/2 and 9/16"...

So it's not a Jeep... sue me... it's still faster!

Just use an adjustable and a small piece of cardboard so u dont scratch the paint, just unscrew the nuts and roll the windows down grab the bottom of the door and the window frame and pull up and swing the door it should come off.

Your effing doors will be a pain to get off. I had to use 2 people to get mine off this year. I would put a good coating of antisieze on the bolt that goes down through the hinge to prevent this from happening during the winter. Removal will be a snap next season.

I have an 02 and the bolts are metric.  They were a little tough to get off but they came off without breaking.  And the doors just pulled right up with a little force.  They could be a little rusted.

Yes those nuts are metric and you need to use some type of wd-40, or antiseize or lube of some sort to make it to where the doors come off easier and the nuts don't "rust" into place.  As far as the size goes for the nuts, I picked up a little vinyl coated wrench from 4wd hardware I think for @ $5 or $10. Can't remeber that's been about 5 years ago.

those nuts are 13mm. use wd and let it soak to get the doors off, after you get the doors off take some sand paper and clean up the rusty part really shinny, do the same on the female part on the jeep by running some very thin sand paper through there. after you got everything really nice and cleaned up take some white litium grease and put it on the bolt part on the door once you got that done put the door back on and it will glide like a beauty and come off nicely when you need to take them off agian.

I use slip plate, it's a grafite available in a aerosoll spray or a can ya can paint it on ir drip it in, that dries and doesn't collect dust and repells water.

no sticky crap to get on ya if ya touch it either..

since the secrets out, I use it on my control arm bushings and shock bushing, along with anything else that needs lubrication and can do without using grease or wd-40 that evaporates..

That's too funny mud I use something similar to the slip plate but, mine is the aerosol graphite lube used for aircraft turbine engine fan blades.  I don't remember who makes it, I just borrowed the can from work.
