I currently am working on a 1976 CJ5 with no power steering. I noticed that it does not have a steering stabilizer. I am unsure if it originally came with one (and the previous owner never replaced it) or it just did not come with one. So my question(s) are: 1) How do I know if it originally had one (is there a way to tell?), 2) Can/Should I put one on (or are they only for power steering models)? Thanks.

look on the steering linkage (center to passenger side) if you see a couple of studs that don't have anything attached to them, chaces are that's where your stabilizer's supposed to be. if it wasn't equiped with one, you can get onr thru the after market that uses clamps to secure it to the steering.

not all of em had one, the later models had a stud built in on the u-bolt pad. they're notorious for breaking off. stabilizer kits are available though for your application in the link chariot left, they come with the necessary brackets and the stabilizer.s
