I recently bought a 96 grand cherokee 5.2l awd. The trans had problem when I bought. The trans has been rebuilt in 05 and parked for a while. I'm guessing because of problem. All ranges park thru first are foward drive gears. Has anyone else had this problem or know what to look for. I'm guessing valve body is clogged or valve is stuck. Rear overdrive case bearing is bad and I'm going to rebuild anyway. Does have plenty or metal shavings in pan. Any help is appreciated. thanks.

Ok I found problem but not what caused it. Clutch pack was fried. had to yank apart with two chains and a chevy. It was pretty cool lol. Is there any reason besides overloading trans ability to pull (towing too much) that would cause this? valve body was in good  shape

nope thats it, tall gears and large tires riding on the stall of the convertor creating way to much heat or to much weight being pulled in overdrive is the cause of that. make sure the cogs in the drums aren't wasted also..

when towing ya kinda need to just use 3rd gear and drive just a little slower keep the revs @2200-3000rpm and you'll never burn er up again and it'll still get decent mileage.
