First time Jeep buyer here, was considering going brand new but found this deal at a local dealer and it looks good (but I want to make sure others agree).

Price:  $21,777
2006 Jeep Wrangler 2dr Rubicon 4x4 SUV features a 4.0L L6 MPI 6 cyl Gasoline engine. It is equipped with a 6 speed manual transmission. The vehicle is Black with a Black interior. It is offered with the remaining factory warranty. Air Conditioning, Tinted Windows, Tilt Steering Wheel, Driver Airbag, Passenger Airbag, Keyless Entry, Security System, ABS Brakes, Fog Lights, AM-FM, Wheels, Four Wheel Drive

And the mileage is 3944 so it's basically new from a mileage standpoint. I'd have to add my own stereo/speakers but I was kinda planning on doing that anyway. So to the experienced Jeep people, does this sound like a good deal?

thats low mileage, the price isn't real bad considering I paid close to 26K for my 03 in o3.

ya can find rubicons 03-06 in the 12-18K range with a few goodies, though I doubt one with 3K on it.

Wow, thats really low miles for an '06... whats wrong with it... this could end up being one of those "too good to be true" deals... Did you drive it yet? How much are they willing to deal?

So it's not a Jeep... sue me... it's still faster!

Haven't taken a look, found it online at autotrader.  I'm gonna set up a test drive for Saturday, I too thought it was low for the mileage since the new 08's I was looking at were well over $30K.  Based on the free carfax report the mileage reported is 3947 as of 07/23/08 when it had its state inspection done, no accidents were mentioned or anything.  I'm not sure how accurate Carfax is though, especially the free report.

Carfax is pretty good when it comes to that kind of stuff... shoot even if it has 5,000 miles on it now thats a pretty sweet deal, especially if they will come down a bit on it.

When determining "value" for a vehicle, number of miles on the clock is not very significant. If you trade in a low milage vehicle, they will add $500 to the value. If it has high mileage they will detuct $1000. "Low miles" is a point that is made for selling a vehicle and not so important for "value".

The used car market is by the book. Condition and miles don't play a big role, unless they are way out of wack. That vehicle is tradded around in the wholsale market place for it's wholesale value, which is $16,600.

Add in $1500 for low miles and good condition and $1000 for dealer profit and you should not be paying any more than $19,100.

Last month i bought an 06 wrangler inlimited hardtop automatic with ac,cruise, factory radio, very stock with 19k on it drive out for 17K i am very happy as it was 2K under bank loan value. You cant go wrong as long as it is clean and is under or around loan value. They hold value like crazy and the rubicons are evden better. Get the dealer to show you the factory warranty history it is free and will let you know if it has been in the shop.

So that vehicle ended up getting sold on Friday (I was supposed to look at it Saturday oh well).  Now I've got a list of jeeps I'm looking for, all used of course.  What's a good general way of figuring out if I'm getting good value?  Do I just look up the Kelly Blue Book value, or is there a general formula I can apply to make sure I'm not getting fleeced.  If anything, I'd say in this economy I should be getting a bargain, as I would think less people are buying Jeeps and SUV's in general right now.  Thanks again in advance for any advice you can provide.

shop in your area and see how low they are really going. get financing from your bank not the dealer. dealers add large percentages on alot of loans now. ask your banker what is fair in your area. my banker is in charge of buying dealer paper and knows what the dealers are paying for both new and used and I took his advice. I had to go 100 miles plus from home to get the deal I got because of the local military base. I got an 06 for what the local dealers wanted for 04s. I actually paid drive out for what they wanted before taxes. do not negotiate payment only negotiate for amount finnced and know what rate they are trying to get you with. That is why you need to arrange financing prior to shopping. You can also save interest by auto debiting your payment. I saved 3/4 of a percent. Good Luck.

Don't buy from the dealers at all. They usually have TJs way over priced. Do private sale. Any bank will lend you the money and if you want an extended warranty you can just buy that too. Even the warranty will be cheaper because there's no commision.

You will save at least $1500 buying private. And if your state is like Arizona, no sells tax when you license it after a private sell. Another $1200 bucks. So, check your tax laws.

its better that you didn't buy it.  That was a little too expensive, at most they should have asked 18k.
