Hello All, I'm new to the forum and wanted to know if any of you have used the K&N Cool Air Intake system. My previous Jeep TJ was only a 4 cyl. and was pretty nice but I just got a 2003 TJ that I've fixed up quite nice with a 6 cyl. - a real welcome improvement in performance. I'm thinking about putting on the K&N Cool Air Intake system. I'm quite happy with the performance stock but thought this would be a easy added bit of HP even though quite subtle. Any thoughts or ideas? Thanks

I just run a K&N stock replacement with my air horn still attached to the box. I doubt you'll feel any difference other than the noise...

Thanks for the reply. It looks like the filter alone would be an improvement - for dry dusty off road use especially.

Stu Olsen who maintains a very informative and detailed web site for TJs, did years of testing different intake scenarios. He now uses the stock air box and filter because he found no performance and no fuel efficiency differences.
What he did find was the K&N specifically did not filter very well. Click here for more info.
This is a good web site, so poke around a little. The link is just the end of the story.

I use a K&N stock replacement with the horn off unless I know I'm getting in deep. Now looking to get more air with the new displacement. Will probably use the stock setup with a bigger throttle body.

I'd say the best mod would be a aem? stock replacement filter and a high flow tube as the kits have, connected to the factory air box. maybe even a mandrel bent piece of exhaust pipe in place of the stock flex tube... if ya really believe the hole for the air horn is insuficient drill a couple 2"holes in the box on the fender side with a hole saw.
theres a possibility that stu's K&N was damaged somewhere along the line during a cleaning process that he failed to mention or never noticed, mine is always clean inside....

I got the aem brute force and I like it. The only problem I had with it is with the spacer installed for the throttle body the tube slightly touches the bottom of the hood. I just removed the spacer and run it like that. My favorite part is cleaning the filter, I just unscrew the clamp pull the filter off then knock it a couple of times against my tire and then put it back on.

go with the AEM!
I have the K&N intake kit and all you have to do is go down a dusty road and the filter needs cleaning which takes a sink, the cleaning kit and like two hours!
