Ok so I have a 97 TJ and want more power,
I was looking in to the chevy 4.3 v6 it's what I want in all sides low and top end power and doesn't require 91+ but there are wiring issues....
my friends all tell me to go 318/350 v8 power but I am wondering with the 13gal tank? I do want to go further than around the block on 1 tank, plus with the v8 i'd have to get the 44's sooner than with the 4.3....
what to do what to do?

well if ya drive resonable, a fuel injected chevy v-8 will exceed the mileage of the 4.0 and stomp on it on the trail.
what size tires/gears are ya running with the 4.0/2.5? they are plenty strong when properly geared. the 4.3 doesnt have much over the 4.0 either other than upper rpm hp

If you could get a 4.3, 2002 or later, complete with wiring harness, computer, all front acceessories, and tranny, for free. And your I6 is tired, I might consider it.
Engine swapping is expensive in terms of time, money and effort. The most expensive part is usually not the cost of the engine.
The popularity of the 4.3 swap into Jeeps did not include the TJ. It just doesn't offer much in return.
If you're going to the expense of swapping, you'll be much better served by a GM GEN III V8.
The biggest hurdle are guages.
For a more compatible swap, you might consider a 5.2 or 5.9 Magnum V8 from a '97 '98 Grand Cherokee. They'll work with the TJ guages.

You have to have a lot of knowledge about engine conversions in order to be sucessful. Conversion knowledge is on top of other automotive mechanical knowledge.
It's not cheap in either time or money.
Here is a document to get your knowledge apatite revved up. Click here for starters.
Try to put together a rough budget for the items you can think of, share that with us, and we'll help you with the stuff you omitted.
Then you can decide preliminarily if you have the budget, before you get too far down the conversion road.

Cost is the same, so you might as well go v8 so you don't want latter. Chevy is the most popular, and has the most support. Budget to do it right!!! about $8000.00. I just completed a 5.3l Gen 3 swap, and it's awesome. It is a large commitment, that takes a lot of research before the purchase, and have it all on hand before you start. After my engine was dropped in, with all items on hand it was only a week to running, and 2nd week was spent fine tunning misc. details. Now it purrs down the road like my chevy truck, and my wifes yukon. A/c is the issue if you offroad at all.(Control arm comes to close to a/c pump in stock location. Everything else was simple with the right preplanning.

Bought a nordskog digital dash. This got rid of jeep computer altogether. Now every guage works corectly, I can instantly adjust speedo for different gearing or tires, and it has turn signal & highbeam indicator lights. Check out (Vortec is in, and oooohhhh!!! sssoooo!!! AWESOME) there is a picture of it.
