Are these two engines the same basic engine.

The 2.4L which started in '03 Wranglers is the "Neon" design motor.
Previous to '03, the Wrangler had a 2.5L. It was an AMC design, modeled after the AMC I6 stuff. The 4.0L uses some of the same parts and designs as the 2.5L.
The 2.5L was used starting in '84 and had a small GM bell housing bolt pattern. Not to be confused with the "K-car" design motors of the same era. The "K-car" design was a 2.2L that grew into a 2.5L for the Acclaim and min-van platforms.
