Lucky for me I live in montana, No emission Testing. I do however believe it would not have been hard to fab in the chevy emmision componets, but there would have been some fabrication. There would have been plenty of room to reuse 1 Chevy cat, However trying to do a dual on drivers side would be very dificult.

Yes it is sweet I would love to do something like that to mine but out in cali it would get real difficult on emissions.

I'm planning on using aftermarket (smaller) catalytic converters on mine so I can reuse the four O2 sensors so that I can pass emissions if Oklahoma ever adopts Texas' pain in the arse regulations. I'm also planning on wheeling in all of the surrounding states and I don't get along with tree huggers much, so I'm just gonna try to make it work.

well when swaping in engines and electromics into a older jeep it's very easy to pass the emmisions when ya use the factory equiptment from the donor.

if ya put a 04 chevy engine/electronics and emmisions equiptment into a 97-04 tj it'll do more than just pass.

I am putting a 5.3 in my 1981 CJ5 and have a few questions, if you can help I'd appreciated it.

What harness are you using?
What fuel tank and fuel pump?
Who is doing your computer chip changes?
How did you wire your ignition?

I have everything together and ready to fire up. Just need the electrical.

I have modified my CJ5 fuel tank and dropped an in tank 255 Wilbor pump.Used an external corvette filter and regulator combo.

The electrical, ignition and fuel issues are my concern right now.

thanks.

Factory chevy harness sent to Fuel injection specalties to remove unused emmission equipment. They also did computer.
In the 97, I used stock tank & Stock fuel pump. Did have to replace fuel pump with new one, as old one was getting weak.
On the 97, the chevy computer only runs the motor & Guages. All other body wiring was kept, and is original jeep.
When the harness is returned to you, every wire is marked, and its an easy plug & play type situation.
Hope this helps,
Let me know if you need more info.

First of all I gotta say that swap tooks SWEET! I'm picking up my 5.3L and 4l60E with harness tomorrow.  Im starting to stock pile parts to shorten the down time since summer is coming.  I was wondering if you had any part numbers of some of the parts you used?  Upper and lower radiator hoses.  The piping from air cleaner to in-take, did you use the doner over-flow for the radiator?  Looking at my 5.3 the cooling fan had one big center nut holding the fan on.  Did you remove the fan?  looks like you went with electric, thats my plan.  How did you hold the water pump on without the fan nut?
Thanks
Oh any more wide angle pictures?

Radiator hoses are trial & Error to get one to fit. Top hose is generic flex, it has leaked, and i'm still trying to find a formed replacement. Keep the stock fan!!!! don't go electric. I have had issues with wiring on the electric fan, and don't really feel safe with it not turning all the time. In major power uses, like hill climbs it can't keep up. Aev who does the hemi swaps, recommend not to put the tranny cooler in the radiator, but install a seperate cooler. This is good advice. Air intake is a KN kit for the chevy pickup, that has been cut down to fit. You can not use donor coolant bottle, just get an aftermarket from a racing supplier.(Nut only holds Fan)

In fact, all AEV's TJ conversions use the stock fan and the stock shroud which allows you to keep the bottle in its stock location.

AEV sells a custom heavy duty radiator that works with the stock shroud, but I'm not sure the outlets are correct for the GM motor. AEV uses HEMI motors in their conversions. But, look into or at least incorporate their ideas. Their custom radiator is made for them, so find out if their supplier will change the outlets if it won't work.

AEV tried many electric fan setups for the TJ and couldn't come up with an electric solution. Heed their wisdom! They're not new to the game.

Also, flex hoses are never a good idea. They put too much stress on the radiator causing premature fatigue. Don't overlook using two hoses that are coupled together with a piece of brass tubing. Sometimes the middle section of a hose will provide the right bends. It's also very effective to use a coupler, that has a mounting tab, bolted to an accessory bolt. That makes hose routing less susceptible to moving parts.

And don't ignore the springs in the lower hoses. They keep the hose from collapsing under hi flow.
