I am driving a modified cj-8 with an amc 304 under the hood and a dana 300 transfer case. I currently have a t-4 4speed, and would like to replace it with an auto that is good as well as stout. Also I'd like it to require little modification as possible. Any suggestions would be greatly helpful.

a th400 with the amc bell will be the best easy solution. adapters are available for the d300, also a crysler 727 is a fair choice, some had d300's stuck to the back from the factory. thats a bolt in and go deal, along with some new driveshafts.
I'm pretty sure I still have a amc belled 400, they aren't that hard to find.

An AMC bell housed TH400 (70's FSJ and CJ7), but needs an adapter for the 300 transfer case.
An '80s FSJ TF727 or the '80s TF999 will bolt right up to your 304 V8 and 300 TC.
The TF727 and TH400 are heavy duty and the TF999 is medium duty.
The TF999 was used in '80 & '81 in CJ7s with a 304 V8 and 300 TC. Also, all the I6 autos in the 80s CJs.
