Electrical short with the fog lamps.

I realise I'm probably not posting this under the right section, but I didn't see one for electrical questions. My fog lamp lamp switch appears to have a short in it. It turns on when I make left hand turns (or at least when I turn the signal on) and when I turn on the park lights. It does this without me pulling out the fog lamp switch. The lamps will stay on until I turn the right turn signal on. My question is would the whole control stick need to be replaced or is there a way to "crack" it open and check the wiring? I'm not sure if it matters but its a 2003 TJ, manual transmission (so no cruise control). Any advice or help will be appreciated. Thanks.

I guess I'm calling the dealer then...  Won't this be fun. Thanks for the quick reply.

Your multi-function switch (turn signal) controls the fog lamp relay. When the hi-beams are on it cuts power to the fog lamp relay. When you turn on the turn signal, are you also maybe applying pressure to activate the high beam. Try some jiggling of the multi-function switch to see what happens.

Ok. I'll try that and see what happens. Thanks again for the quick reply.

Put a tester on the fog lamp relay. Maybe it's had a melt down.

I feel stupid asking this, but where is the relay?

Right inner fender. In front of the battery. Black box. Squeeze the tabs closest to the battery. Swing up and forward to open.

So I tested the relay. Its good and so is the fuse. I also took apart the dash to check and test the wiring. Its all good too, so I have to assume it is the switch. My new question is can a multi-function switch from an '03-era Liberty/Grand Cherokee be used to replace it? Wrangler's are  pretty much non-existent in the junk yards around here. Also, how do you remove the switch? The Haynes manual states there is a switch/button/release tab on the left side of the column that will allow removal of the entire function stick if the headlights are in the "on" position. I can't, for the life of me, find it. Once again, any advice or help would appreciated.

The switch from Jeep retails for $74. Many online Jeep parts dealers sell it for $58. Order one up online or ask your local dealer for their wholsale price. They'll usually give it to you.
