I RECENTLY BOUGHT A 99 TJ IT HAS A 2
"BODY LIFT MAYBE A 3" SUSPENSION LIFT I IMAGINE PROBALLY AROUND 2 THOUGH, IT HAS 35/12.50/15'S ON IT NOW WHEN IM TURNING IT MAKES A POPPING NOISE IN THE FROUNT AND REAR AND JERKS AS IF SOMETHING IS BINDING UP, IT DONT ALWAYZ DO IT . IT SEEMS TO BE MORE AT LOW SPEED THAT IT POPS AND RATHER LOUDLY AT TIMES, I AM NOT A AXLE GURU, BUT I DO MOST OF MY ENGINE WORK MYSELF,I ALSO NOTICED THAT THERE IS PLAY IN THE AXLE SHAFT APROXI. 1/16 OF A INCH, IS THAT NORMAL OR IS THAT A SIGN OF A BIGGER PROBLEM IN THE FUTURE? THANKS GUYS, ALSO THAT PLAY  SEEMS TO BE IN AND OUT AS WELL AS UP DOWN

One or a combination of three things. Differential spider gears, axle u-jont, or unit bearing/wheel bearing.

it seems to be mainly when your turning, in either direction at low speeds, and what about the play in the axle shaft is that normal or a sign of trouble?

the poping mainly happens on the rear axle at slow speed turns in either direction

Lift both rear tires off the ground. Put the trans in gear or park. Rotate one of the rear tires. The opposite tire should rotate in the opposite direction. It should be smooth and quiet.

Do you know if there is any kind of locker or limited slip?

Post back what you find.

yea it spins but it seems as though it has a catch in it, as if someone was holding the other wheel but on ly in certain places, and all i know is that there is a tag on the rear diff that says use limited slip diff fluid only(and by the way once it gets by the catch it spins easy again,i got a messed up set of spider gears dont i?

C-clip axles are sloppy.

Are you talking about the rear? And is it a Dana 35?

Are you having problems with the front axle also?

Take your time and write a big, long, as detailed as possible description of what problems you're trying to address. Be specific about how and when they occur.

Braking, turning left, turning right, accelerating, bump etc...

yes i am referring to the rear axle and it is a dana 35, i am assuming it has a trac lok diff in it as i told you b-4 about the tag, now its a loud jerking pop in the rear axle at low speed turns in either directionit doesnt happen at road speed just when you are taking off ,and if the rear end is jacked up and the rear tires are rotated in gear one does spin backwards, and it seems as though it has a catch or spot that it binds up somewhat if you will, the tires shudder when it pops and i noticed it when i jacked the rearend up and spun the tires so i know its in the rear axle, and i havent noticed so much if it does it on bumps, maybe alittle axle slop noise but not this loud booming pop

There is something wrong. That test should produce smooth rotation.

If you lift one tire off the ground and put the trans in neutral, you should feel some resistance as you spin the other tire. But, it should be smooth, not notchy, just a little resistance.

If the notchyness is not too severe, it might be able to be saved by a fluid change and a friction disc modifier additive for trac-loc differentials. This is what is recomended as a first step by the factory service manual.

In order to change the fluid, you'll have to pull the cover. This is also the time to give everything an inspection. Pay close attention to the spider gears. These are the little gears (4 of them), not the ring and pinion gears.

Look at everything closely, and post back your findings.

yes something is wrong when i cracked the diff seal and fluid and metal shavings started running out i knew, this was a sign of larger porportions,i took the cover off to find chunks not pieces but chunks of spider gear laying around, now after getting the wedge pin outta the center pin, the center pin wont clear the ring gear on either side what should i do now?how do i get the center pin out withoput screwing up the ring gear
