Quick question, I am wanting to swap my current '95 YJ axles for Dana 44's. I understand some late model Cherokee's or Gr Cherokee's or Comanches/Commandos had D44 axles that would work. Any idea as to what year would be an ideal swap for my '95 YJ? I realize the leaf spring perches may have to be repositioned. Also are only aftermarket axles available that have the high take off in the rear axle. Thanks for putting up w a newbie.

well first off youd be crazy to want to put a gr cherokee in for the record (weak housings)... second is if could find a cherokee or comanches your ahead of the game cuz they go in quick and easy but all i have to say to that is good luck. i personally swaped in grand wagoneer axles in front and rear (all you listed are only rear) and if you have a welder and time i thought it was fairly easy youd want 87-92 for the left drop for the pumpkin on the front... little narrower than wranglers but good back spacing takes care of that.

'74-'79 Wagoneer/Narrow Track Cherokee with Dana 20 TC has a rear centered D44. If it does not have a Dana 20 the rear D44 is not centered. The front is a D44 but a passenger side drop.
'80, '81, '85-'91 Wagoneer/Narrow Track Cherokee has a front D44 driverside drop. But, '80-'85 have an AMC 20 rear. '82-'84 front is a D44 but some (or all??) are vacuum disconnect.
'86-'91 Wagoneer/Narrow Track Cherokee has a rear D44. You may find a mixed bag of AMC 20 and D44 in '86.
The complete vehicle for both front and rear you want is '86-'91 Wagoneer/Narrow Track Cherokee. But, everyone else wants that too.
Some little Cherokees and Comanches had rear D44. Rare and hard to find. The fronts were always D30. These are 5x4.5 lug and all the Wagoneer/Narrow Track Cherokee stuff is 6 lug.
The Grand Cherokees that have a rear D44 are aluminum and you don't want one. They are junk. The fronts are D30.
