So, I finally scrounged enough bucks to buy a CJ-7.  1985 with 258 and Dana 30 in the front and AMC 20 in the back with a t300 TC. Have had several of the old pre 84 cherokees and wagoneers and wonder if the Dana 44's under them are the same width and if they would be a bolt-on. Or any other suggestions. Scouts are hard to come by in this country but the older jeep wagons are a dime a dozen.

This is just quick off the top of my head.

Your CJ-7 axle width is 54". The Wagoneer and narrow track (no flender fares) FSJ Cherokee is 59".

74-79 has 44 front and rear with front passenger side drop. 78-79 does not have flat top knuckle. Quadratrac has offset rear. So you need non Quadratrack. They had Dana 20 TC. The Quadratrac has a BorgWarner TC.

80-91 has 44 front with driverside drop. 80-85 has AMC 20 rear. So, 80-85 is no good. 86-91 has 44 rear that would work.

They are not bolt in but are an easy and common swap.

Don't even think about a Scout. Guys are unsucessful because of a caster that won't work.

i know the cj series had a wide track and a narrow track just as did the wagoneers and cherokees... though i've never seen a wide track wagoneer

Yes, the early CJs, 72-81 had a narrower track 52"-53". The later CJs, 82-86 had around 55". Some say 56, some say 55, others say 54.5 or 55.5. Same thing goes for the Wagoneer. Some say 58, others say 59".

The one common measurement that is frequently sited is the Wagoneer is 4" wider than the late CJ.

YJs and TJs are 61.

What is really wierd is that people are actually measuring the thing, and everyone comes up with a different measurement.

Count on your tires sticking out 2 additional inches on ech side. That seems to be the common answer.

The 2 inches sounds simple enough.  I just found out my 20 has a bent shaft on the driver side.  I think I will get the one piece conversion kit for now until I decide (and get the $$) for a new set of axles front and rear. Thanks for the input.
