So, I found a set of Dana 44's from a 1979 Cherokee on Craigslist. They are the width that I want and I have no problems moving the spring perches and making new steering links. The problem is that the Cherokee had the quadratrack system in it. Does this mean the rear diff is going to be off center? Will it cause drive shaft vibration at high way speeds? Will it bind up the drive shaft while flexing offroad? They are going under a 1980 CJ7 with the 258 and a dana 300 using a spring under suspension. Any help will be great, i'm supposed to pick them up on Friday. Thanks!

Yah, if it's going to be too much of an issue I can always find a 9" in a junkyard and have the hot rod shop down the street shorten it for me.

Click here for more info. Yes, it is offset to the passenger side. Some who run axles from Dana 18 TCs conversions say it's OK. The Dana 18 TC has the same offset.

So, what's the general idea? Would you run the 44 or keep looking for a 9" and pay to have the housing shortend?

When doing custom stuff, things don't always turn out perfect.
So, addresss the things that you know are not "right".
Then, after all the things that you didn't quite figure out correctly, the whole thing doesn't turn out like crap.
I want the right stuff and I'm willing to pay for it. But, some people use stuff that they know is not right because of the price. That usually means it was free.
And it's even easier for me to give this advice to others cause it aint my money. So, hold out for the "right" axle.

I'll ask if he can just sell the front because that is the axle I want. It has the width, and flat top knuckles, and strength I am looking for. I can just go to pick-a-part and find a 1/2 ton ford with a 9"and run that. Those things are way strong and will hold up to anything I will throw at it.

The Dana 20 transfer case Wagoneer up to 79 or an '86 to '91, narrow track Dana 44 rear is 59", centered diff, with 6x5.5 lug.
But the '80 to '91 Wagoneer front is a driverside diff, so it won't work as a package deal for your Dana 300.

I don't think the '79 had a flat top knuckle. Only '74-'77.
